Olivia Finch, Ellen MacArthur Foundation      Richard Boyd (ARUP)

Olivia Finch, Ellen MacArthur Foundation & Richard Boyd, ARUP

Olivia Finch is a senior analyst within the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Insight and Analysis Team. She is currently working with Arup on a project to explore the value and process of implementing circular economy principles in the built environment. Olivia also works on the overall strategy and management of a portfolio of other philanthropically funded research projects. Prior to joining the Foundation, Olivia spent ten years in sustainability consultancy, advising businesses on their sustainability strategies, with a particular focus on environmental policy, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental risk. During this time she spent several years focused on the built environment sector, working collaboratively with engineers, architects, planners, local authorities and other key stakeholders to promote sustainable development projects and produce holistic environmental and sustainability assessments for large scale regeneration projects.
Richard Boyd is a professionally qualified engineer. He became an engineer to respond to two challenges: poverty alleviation through development and climate change mitigation through new technologies and systems. He is increasingly fascinated by the tensions that arise between these challenges. His dual interest has led him to work on building and infrastructure projects across the developed and developing world. He is part of Arup’s Advanced Technology and Research group and specialises in carbon management and the transition to a circular economy. His current work includes research with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on implementing a circular economy in the built environment. He is also leading a collaboration with UCL Estates and Academics looking at the potential for circular economy ideas to radically change the design, procurement and operation of Building Services installations. He is engaged in industry-wide discussions, particular on carbon, circular economy and housing. In 2017 he has spoken on circular economy to Ecobuild, Digital Construction Week, Green Sky Thinking Week, the Museum of Architecture and IABSE Bath. He has been published in Business Green and has been a guest contributor to CBRE’s blog Green Perspective. He is a member of the NLA’s NextGen network and the Edge. His previous experience includes contracting for Sir Robert McAlpine and structural engineering design in Arup’s multi-disciplinary design studio, Arup Associates.
